Welsh Athletics Under 17, Under 20, Senior League - 20/05/18

After the first round match at Cardiff near the end of April, the Cwrt Herbert Athletics Track in Neath was the venue for the second Welsh Athletics Senior League on Sunday 20th May on one of the warmest days of the year so far. It saw a total of 157 athletes involved from more than 15 clubs with events including the 100m, 300m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 2k Walk, Sprint Hurdles, Sprint Relays, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Javelin, Shot and Discus.

In another small turnout of eight from the Carmarthen club, all those who were in attendance produced some excellent results.

Scott Davies and Tal Davies were making their debuts for the club in the under 17 age group and made good starts. Davies (Scott) finished the 100m in 12.5 and then threw best attempts of shot (9.79m) and (21.57m) in the discus later on in the day. Meanwhile Tal ran 12.7 in the sprint.

It was also a busy day for Lewis Evans, just a few days after the sprints open in Cardiff. Competing in three events, Evans first took to the 100m start finishing in 11.6 before ending with 7.96m and 25.86m in the shot and javelin respectively.

Loughborough International 2018 - 20/05/18

Up in Loughborough on Sunday 20th May as action unfolded in Neath, the Welsh Athletics contingent of over 40 made the journey for the 2018 Loughborough International with the chance for developing and experienced athletes to represent their country in a top competition. Featuring Wales, England, Scotland and Loughborough University, Alicia Samuel and Glen Elsdon were the Carmarthen duo to head on the coach.

After disappointedly missing out on a run in the senior 4x100 relay, Alicia Samuel did get another chance to perform on the big stage in the women's 100m guest race. In warm conditions, her 12.26 third place finish in her heat ensured she came away with a great experience. The same can be said for Glen Elsdon, who had to wait until the very last race of the day for his 110m Hurdles. His finishing time was 14.91.

Carmarthen Open Throws Meeting Round 2 - 24/05/18

After a great start at the opening fixture, over 30 athletes again attended the second Carmarthen Open Throws Meeting on Thursday Evening, 24th May. Javelin throwers had to contend with the wet weather while the shot putters were lucky as it had stopped by the time their event got underway. Organised by Ralph Siggery, the under 13 plus competition gives young and senior athletes from clubs across South Wales and further afield the opportunity to improve on their personal power of 10 best performances.

It was great to see some great throwing on the evening including from two of Wales' finest in Bethany Moule and Nathan James. Fresh from their fantastic performances at the Loughborough International, Mould having thrown over 51 metres that day got a best of 47.16m at Carmarthen with James also showing high standard with 56.75m. A haul of personal bests also came from the club youngsters hoping to develop as the season progresses.

Thanks to the athletes and officials who once again supported the event. June's Open Throws will see the Javelin and Hammer on Thursday 28th June at 18:00 at the Leisure Centre.

Made up of athletes from Pembrokeshire Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Neath Harriers, and Llanelli AAC, the red and black vests performed well again in the Welsh Capital to repeat its fourth place finish on Sunday. It's set to be a grand stand finish between Team Avon & Cardiff AAC for the top spot, but for those in the West, the composite team as well as Swansea will start looking ahead towards the promotion match where retaining their premier division status will be the aim at the end of July.

Thanks to team managers - the fab five Peter, Rob, Joan, Liz and Bethan for their hard work again of getting best possible team up to Cardiff on the day despite the other events and half term holidays.

Many of the Carmarthen Harriers representing had been very bush in the above reports the previous weekend. In the early events, Ben Thomas and Tomos Rees were in 1500m races for under 17 and under 20 men. Thomas was third in a very close finish (4:02:78) while Rees took another victory (4:13:33). Moving onto the sprints, Tal Davies stepped up to the under 20 men's 100m and recorded a good time of 12:57 and was followed by Rhun Edwards running 56:61 in the 400m. Iwan Glynn went in the 200m and 400m double recording performances of 23:99 and 52:39. Alicia Samuel in the women's under 20 sprint went even faster than she did last Sunday (Loughborough) in 12:12 before also filling in on the 200m (25:23).

Four of the Harriers meanwhile were picking up valuable points in the field events. Lauryn Davey was placed in the top three of both the long jump (5.27m) and shot (9.79m). Danielle Jones was entered into the three throws events and in a short space of time, won the under 20 women's discus (32.93m) as well as securing bests of 8.10m (shot) and 16.56m (javelin). Scott Davies in only his second club event threw the shot out to 10.24m and discus to 21.54m. Ryan Thomas jumped 1.60m in the high jump.

Davies, Glynn, Edwards, Thomas, Samuel, Davey and Rees all had enough energy left to help the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays out too in the penultimate events of the afternoon.

The final match of three is to come at Exeter on Sunday 1st July then the fixture on 29th July is to be confirmed depending on where each of the teams finish in the league table to see whether it's the regional final or the promotion match.
